International Football / Soccer phenom and oh-so-dreamily-British-accented David Beckham avoided injury and effort Saturday as his Los Angeles Galaxy soundly tied F.C. Dallas at Pizza Hut Park.
Beckham slow-jogged his team to a fair and impartial outcome in the meaningless charity event, deftly passing the ball away to teammates and easily defending against physical contact.
The near-capacity, mostly ignorant crowd -- many of whom endured $7 Bud Light and other inconveniences to catch a glimpse of England's most underwear-friendly export since Benny Hill -- was treated to low-or-no-scoring, high-quarreling football at its finest. Many sported brand new L.A. Galaxy jerseys bearing Beckham's name, despite the fact that they had never lived in Los Angeles, attended an MLS match or heard of the Galaxy.
"That was boring," said 7-year-old Bridget -- an avid soccer player whose little-league team routinely averages five points per game. When asked about her favorite part of the contest, Bridget replied, "The pretzel."
Beckham's highlight play -- a seemingly impossible pass to teammate Landon Donovan that resulted in a wildly inaccurate attempt on the F.C. Dallas goal -- occurred somewhere between the 46th and 90th minutes, and went largely unnoticed by fans who had turned their attention to last call and their sippie-cups.
